Many image makers reject traditional portraiture, considering it weighed down with tired conventions.

PHOTOGRAPHY WAS born into the social realism of the 19th century and has its roots in a style of art which has always been telling as much as showing us truths. Where experimental photography may obscure its subject in the shadows of an imposed surrealism, Petter Hegre's vision captures models in a state of pure naturalism.

Tatina is the perfect example. She is 19, with a still-forming body and a thick mop of blonde hair. She often lowers her head and gazes at the camera lens over the tops of her eyes as if she is deciding what expression to wear and, while that decision is still being processed, the shutter snaps and the result can't help but be just right.

Tatina has a distinctive V for Victory carved in her bush – and must wonder whether that's one of the specialities of Lithuania!
